In our household, we have books everywhere and by everywhere I mean EVERYWHERE! You'll see books on the dining room table, on our bookshelves (where they belong), under the bed, on the sofa, the tv stand, the floor, the dresser, and a few other places.

Every morning on the weekdays before work, the kids and I head over to my parents and eat breakfast. My mom has to ask my daughter and I repeatedly to put the books away. We are always reading! So we actually have books at their house too! It is very important to read to your child when they are young. I did it with my kids since they were babies. I would read to them while they were in my womb. My kids love to read, they always choose books over technology.

There are a few benefits to reading.
  • Helps prioritize goals
  • Improves analytical thinking
  • Enhanced Smarts
  • Improves memory
  • Greater tranquility
  • Reading reduces stress
  • Increases vocabulary
  • Improves writing skills
  • Can ease depression
  • Make you more empathetic
  • Helps you sleep better
  • Might even stave off Alzheimer's disease
There's a great article I came across that talks about it. It was published by Psychology Today by Christopher Bergland, titled Reading Fiction Improves Brain Connectivity and Function. I recommend this article. It is definitely worth reading.

Here's are two excerpts from the article:

"The researchers found that becoming engrossed in a novel enhances connectivity in the brain and improves brain function. Interestingly, reading fiction was found to improve the reader's ability to put themselves in another person’s shoes and flex the imagination in a way that is similar to the visualization of a muscle memory in sports."

"Surprisingly, 42% (link is external) of college graduates will never read a book again after graduating college."

These numbers to me were very surprising. I don't know if it has to do with all of the work they did in college or if they just were never taught to pick up a book and enjoy it. Reading will always be to us an adventure. It's a time to bond with your children or just a way for you to escape the real world for a bit and be imaginative. It's good to give your brain that journey and experience to a 'new world'.

Below are a few new releases in children's books. Start adding some new books to your kiddos library.
