Our Family Trip to the Public Library!

For many unknown reasons, the public library isn't used much. You walk in and see a handful of people in there. Today we decided it was time to go and get Mikey his very own library card. Mikey is my 6 year old son, who is also Destiny's younger and only brother. Destiny was excited to go and so was Mikey. I couldn't help but get super excited and remember the days I spent in the library. I would beg my mom to take me! In middle school, I would walk and stay there until my parents would pick me up around 6pm. This generation has turned more tech savvy which sort of saddens me. I'm all for kindles and iPads, but I would much rather read a real book. There is something about flipping a real page and the smell of a book that is truly gratifying for me. And the look of a real bookshelf versus a digital bookshelf is not the same. Today's trip was extra special and gave me some much needed bonding time with my kiddos.

We walked in and started the process of getting our library cards. Destiny had to renew hers and I also had to renew mine. Mikey on the other hand, had to get a new one! His very own library card! He was so excited, he could not stop dancing around! We headed upstairs and I snapped a few shots of the kiddos. Mikey spotted the huge ceiling to floor windows and walked over and looked out.

He tried waving to people passing by but I had to tell him that those were mirrored windows so we can see out but they could not see in. The next pic shows his reaction to that.

After waiting for his card to be done, we walked around a little and spied on Destiny looking at books. She wanted to check out so many books that I had to limit her to 4! For those that know my daughter, know that she can read a 500-600 page book in half a day. I honestly do not know how she does it but that is why she is co-author of this blog. :-)

At this point, I had already told her to put back 1 book. She has 3 in her hand! She still was searching for more. We were walking towards the children's section and she found her 4th book. You will see the 4 books she chose at the end of this post.

We headed to the children's section and Mikey and I sat down. We decided that started today were were going to learn all about animals, reptiles, and amphibians. This week he chose to check out 2 books on snakes! Every 3 weeks when the books are due, we will go back and choose 2 new books. We also decided that he will write down everything he has learned about the animals, reptiles, or amphibians in his notebook. He is so ecstatic to start this project.

They kiddos were proudly displaying their books and their new public library cards! This put the biggest smile on my face! Are you read to see what Destiny chose? Take a look below! She finished reading one of the books in under 2 hours! How is that humanly possible? I have no idea but I tell what, it feels good to know that I birthed someone that is capable of doing that.

The books she checked out today were:

Her selection was an impressive one. She is halfway finished with Tokyo Heist. She will be putting her review for Schizo on here by the end of this week so make sure you stay tuned for that!

My son is a fast reader like that too. I don't know how he does it! He doesn't like to write, though, so I haven't succeeded in getting him to review his books on my blog. Maybe if I offer to make him the co-author of the blog that would help!

I love library time! We don't get a lot of chances to go during the school year, but spend a LOT of time there during the summers.

During the school year it gets pretty hard but I figured school is almost over so I'd take them once it opened and start them early.

Julie, I don't know how your son and my daughter read that fast! My daughter loves to write but it get's too hard for her with school. She is much better at making videos and explaining it in a video than typing. We will be doing video reviews as well very soon. You should definitely make him a co-author! I bet he would love it!

That's a shame that your public library isn't used more. The library is a wonderful resource. One thing I miss about living out in the woods is that our library is an hour away - you're lucky to have one close.

Some of the teens would prefer to be at the mall rather than at the library. I'm glad my teen prefers the library. Our library is on the other side of town which is about 15-20 minutes away but because of construction going on around that area, it takes about 45 minutes to get there.

Our library has a great summer reading program, so we go through a lot of books :)

Ours does too. I love it! They have a teen book club which my daughter is a huge fan of. She goes and wishes more teens would be involved.
